Stephen Harper doesn't need a majority

God Is My Shepherd

Paul Wells in MACLEANS

As long as the official opposition wimps out, Stephen Harper is just fine with a minority government.

He can change the country by increments, and keep everyone on the defensive.

As Harper said a few years back, when I’m finished, you won’t recognize the country. And as Paul Wells puts it…He’s got us right where he wants us.

Since your posting Wells has tried to back track .by Paul Wells on Thursday, August 5,
” Hey look: the PM, hanging by a thread and lovin’ it ” ” From the print edition, my monthly brain-in-a-jar Harper column. This one contrasts nicely with this morning’s Ekos poll. Could my powers of prognostication have failed me? Time alone will tell!…”

Do you think Wells missed or omitted the truth ? Could this just be the result of political parties leaders having complete control of otherwise very talented M.P.s and membership structure ? Maybe the liberals should set up a true shadow Government in caucus and use their collective talents instead of looking for a saviour ? Iggy better gut the PMO !

Paul Wells is right. It reminds me of the parable of the boiling frog: if uou put a frog in pot of water on a stove, and gradually turn up the heat, the frog does not notice – and ends up getting boiled. We Canadians are like the frog these days.

Everything old is new again… except it seems Harpoon has one foot on both sides of the definition.

    OBSCURANTISM
Concerted opposition, on principle and from religious motives, to justified intellectual development. A familiar charge against Christians by rationalist critics who charge the faithful with fear of enlightenment lest they weaken their beliefs. (Etym. Latin obscurus, dark; unintelligible.)

Did I not see this movie at maple leaf gardens ? ( 40 years of re-runs )

Fire the coach , these guys can carry eggs in their pockets in the corners and not break any .

Fire the coach , these players are just cement heads .

Fire the management …….. With a change in owners watch the difference ……….

And the shareholder backroom profits never higher …….

    I don’t think so.

The polls have an awful lot to do with the decisions to call an election and I think that the current trend of increasing popularity for the Liberals is going to continue.

The reason is that Stephen does not give a damn for all the misfires this summer of Helena Guergis, The F-35, the long form census and the prison budget.

Well the people of Canada are getting fed up and Michael Ignatieff is getting stronger with the “Liberal Express”.

By September I think Michael will be showing himself as much stronger leader and I suspect he will defeat the government on some issue this fall and will do very well in the resulting election.

I know I may be the only one in Canada who sees things this way but I think I will eventually be proven correct.

by small increments, yes. Not so scary that way, people get used to the changes, and before you know it, the seemingly unconnected changes connect and Steve controls so much it’s difficult to oust him. Even when we do, so much damage will have been done, and while I much prefer the Liberals, I am not naive enough to think they won’t leave some of Steve’s mess in place for their own power plays.

I agree with you Mike. The Libs are slowly gaining ground as Harper is losing his. The census and G20 did stevie a lot of damage as did his failure to address family planning at the G8. Judging by comments on news sites and comparing them to even 6 months ago, more people are seeing him for what he is. Little worried about him gaining some traction over the Tamil refugees, though. Boatloads of migrants scare people who don’t take the time to learn about where the refugees come from, what we can do to help without being overrun…
