A wise old friend from Burma, far better acquainted with history than I could ever hope to be, advised me that future writings will identify democracy as a twentieth-century experiment which failed.
Watching the emergence of a new corporate regime in USA is sobering confirmation. The next six months will be a burlesque depiction of democracy at work, but only a demented idealist could believe that the people are deciding and not Big Money aka the War Machine.
If my friend is right, democracy will fail because of stupid voters who have no idea what their responsibilities are. They shouldn’t be allowed to vote.
For instance, the cadre of embittered post-nomination Clinton-supporters. Having supported her fervently throughout her Democratic career, 22% will not vote at all, another 17% will vote for John McCain this fall.
This is a serious problem for Barack Obama. According to surveys, its roots lie in the suburbs of USA where his popularity with women Democrats trails the national picture significantly, yet it is a demographic of above average education.
McCain’s campaign is betting that even women who favor abortion rights may be willing to accept a difference of opinion on that issue if they like what they hear McCain saying on broader issues such as national security, the economy, and healthcare.

So Roe vs. Wade is back on the table at the instigation of women Democrats. Won’t that be a good day for ol’ Popeye.
The sheep are setting the table for Mr. Fox but they haven’t quite decided what’s for dinner.
Yet.

In his dotage, Winston Churchill opined that “democracy” was the worst system of government in the world…except for all the rest.
Let’s not forget the lengths to which rich and powerful humans can go to get what they want. The United States of America – as a nation – was founded by a small clique of men…mostly slave owners, who proclaimed that what they wanted was “freedom”. What they really wanted though, was the freedom to accumulate even more power and wealth. Slavery continued as an institution under the American constitution for many years. Since then, not a whole lot has changed. The primary difference is that there are now more slaves.
Lets get real – there is no democracy and there is no freedom.
Sequel: Firstly, since posting I’ve read accounts from former McCain navy-mates expressing jawdropped astonishment that this trainwreck of a sailor got anywhere at all in life, never mind within grasp of the most powerful position on the planet.
Comparing his military record to the current White House toilet-flusher, it needs to be said that McCain at least turned up for service before he started smashing things.
Secondly, the possibility that Clinton’s bitter camp is prepared to deal with McCain on Roe vs. Wade….. these are significantly middle-years women, beyond the need of their treasured abortion rights.
Another case of “cut the rope, I’m up?”
that place he seeks is seriously devalued now and will continue to be in decline.
the real desperation is now showing…they want another cold war to rey to keep the legions alive.
it won’t work
If this contest ends up with four guys in it, Obama will be beaten by McCain.
But if he chooses Kathleen Sebelius as VP he will win.
What possible gain could there be in ignorng an excellent woman-candidate?
Seems pretty straight-ahead to me.
