From the very beginning, the Liberals failed to explain properly their "Green Shift" plan.
Everyone called it a "carbon tax", when in fact, the term "tax" was a complete misnomer.
Under Dion’s plan, those who pollute would be required to pay a price…a fee…in effect a "carbon premium", or put another way "polluters would have to pay up as part of the cost of doing business".
The rest of us pay a fee to control emissions from our cars. Why shouldn’t big business be required to pay a fee to control their emissions.
It makes sense.

Comment of the week found on the Globe and Mail site:
Gilles Monenemie from Montreal: We need to change the voting
system to encourage participation and to better represent the actual
vote count as MPs in Parliament. It’s so mixed up I ended up giving
money to the Greens and voted for another party. I am a federalist who
ended up voting for the BQ for the first time as I didn’t want to see
the CPC win in my riding because they least represented my values. It’s
a sad state of affairs when Canadians have to hold their nose to vote.
Something needs to be done to fix the problem and the proportional
representation system seems to be the best solution.

Could it be this simple? I think it is. Have you sent this to the Liberal Party?
I agree absolutely. However, the real problem was that the Liberals stood by and watched as Dion’s plan was reframed by the CPC, and did nothing to counter it.
Just as they stood by for a year and a half while the CPC unleashed a massive program of character assassination on Dion, and did nothing to counter it.
The Liberals hung Dion out to dry. I wonder how many of them realize how badly they have hurt themselves and their party.
with reference to the comment from the Globe – congrats for finding one that is polite – we need two things in Canada.
Electoral reform and better voter turn out.

Cheer up, everyone!
The Dion Libs did worse than Turner’s ’84 performance. We got a good deal this time, only a Con minority.
Last time it was two back-to-back majorities for Brian “Suitcase” Mulroney, the biggest shyster ever in Ottawa.
Much as we like to mock USA for re-electing their village idiot….we need to look in the mirror ourselves once in a while.
Yes. It’s that old expression isn’t it…garbage in…garbage out. George Carlin had a shtick about it he said something like, “Everybody says that politicians suck!! Well maybe it’s not just the politicians that suck…maybe something else sucks around here…like…the public.”
I guess our consolations comes in the fact that the Canadian public sucks less that the ones down south.
If you want to see that Carlin bit it’s here.

I agree with the first comment. I believe the Liberals with the Media helping them (CTV) especially, (perhaps Iggy lovers) hung Dion out to dry.
I must admit, I did not vote for him either as every time I heard him speak he was not very understandable even though I know he’s a smart, passionate man who loves Canada.
I’m sure he’s feeling very wounded at this point, but the show must go on. Hmmmmm, next.
Jim, we suckers are all the same, it’s just that they have a few million more down there to choose from.
What we need is proportional
representation…that way, greens, libs, cons, ndp etc etc will get some space in parliament.
