Hateful American/Israeli Rhetoric Toward Iran is Misplaced and Dangerous

“Iran’s Jewish community lives in relative tranquility…”

Roger Cohen, a usually conservative-minded columnist for The New York Times, is often the most unusually open-minded writer when it comes to looking at the world around us.

It’s one of the things that I like most about The Times – it is home to such a wide variety of intelligent observation and informed opinion. It’s a comforting place to go in the morning with cup of coffee and an inquiring mind.

But it’s the ability of the Times to observe that impresses most.

Roger Cohen’s column today (Monday, February 23rd), is an outstanding example of open-mindedness, rationality and not only that – it is an eye-opener.

It’s many years since I’ve been in Iran, but I have happy memories of the country and its people. Cohen’s column brought back mental images of Palestine Square in Teheran and the Jewish community that still thrives in Iran. It reminded me that by and large, the Iranians are good people.

It reminded me too of George W. Bush’s hateful, mindless, jingoistic rhetoric, so out of touch with reality and so distant from humanity.

Roger Cohen: Highly recommended.
